The Forum - April Session
Saturday, April 28, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Location:
Northern Virginia Urban League Headquarters
1315 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA

Join The Forum as we discover one author’s solution to the “Race Problem” in America – turn all of the blacks into whites. George Schulyer’s “Black No More” is a rare mixture of fantasy, political commentary and satire (with a little bit of horror!). Written in 1931, this piece of fiction causes deep reflection on racism, classism, racial pride and solidarity and the role of capitalism in personal lives. You don’t want to miss this discussion as we consider the thought-provoking question – if you could cease being black and become another race, would you?

Please RSVP for this event by sending an email to forum@nvulypn.org by Thursday, April 28th.

For more information please contact Audra Savage, The Forum Chair, at forum@nvulypn.org.

The Forum - YPN Book Club The Forum

YPN's book club, The Forum, provides a comfortable and relaxed setting for young professionals to discuss pertinent social, economic and lifestyle topics.

A source of controversy upon its 1929 publication, "The Blacker the Berry" by Wallace Thurman, was the first book to openly address color prejudice among black Americans. Join The Forum on February 25 as we reflect on the heroine’s attempt to accept the color of her pigment as we consider this vestige of slavery as part of this year’s theme of The Harlem Renaissance 2.0. We’ll also read the poetry of Georgia D Johnson and listen to Jelly Roll Morton, all while enjoying a soul food dinner.

The theme for the 2011-2012 is "The Harlem Renaissance 2.0".  It has been almost 100 years since this important movement that empowered African-Americans through the use of literary and musical arts. The Forum will take a 21st century look at this early 20th century renaissance by reading nine novels written during this time, as well as essays, poems and short stories.
