Wallace Gooden – "Why did you join? Why do you stay?"
"When I first joined YPN six years ago, I was very unfamiliar with Northern Virginia and The Urban League in general. I merely joined to network with other like minded peers and professionals of diverse industry professions and educational backgrounds. YPN has always allowed me to be valued contributor who fosters personal development, social consciousness, and community involvement.
I immediately jumped at the opportunity to support a major mission of the Northern Virginia Urban League by serving on the scholarship selection committee and host ambassador for the past five years. On these teams, I’ve help to provide merit based scholarships to deserving African American high school seniors from Northern Virginia public school systems to attend an accredited four-year college or university. This allows us to help shape the future in young people by encouraging, inspiring and mentoring their interests in higher education.
YPN is an inclusive environment that has provided me enduring personal relationships. So far, I feel that I have gotten out of the organization what I have put into it. YPN serves as the gateway to have executive mentors in my professional development and access to social, political and economic opportunities in my personal development."
